UK, France invest £184m in autonomous minehunters The UK and France have made further investment into the development of autonomous minehunting systems which could eventually replace the in-service Hunt and Sandown class minehunting ships. The £184m investment in the Maritime Mine Counter Measure (MMCM) programme will see further funding go to Thales and L3 Harris work into the development of autonomous systems able to detect and neutralise sea mines.

Shipbuilder Damen signs 4.6-billion-euro German frigate contract | SWZ|Maritime France’s Thales has won a 1.5 billion-euro contract to build combat systems for four advanced MKS 180 frigates to be built for Germany by Dutch shipbuilder Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding. It is the third-biggest contract in the history of Europe’s largest defence electronics maker, outpaced only by major deals to equip France’s Rafale fighter and FREMM multi-mission frigate, Thales Chief Executive Patrice Caine told Reuters.

Credit: Defence Army’s new Australian-designed and built Hawkei protected vehicle is ready to enter full-rate production at Thales’ Protected Vehicles facility in Bendigo, Victoria. Under Land 121 Phase 4, 1,100 Hawkei vehicles and 1,058 associated trailers will be delivered, with the full rate production vehicles expected to commence delivery from mid-2021.
