Thales has introduced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies into legacy armoured vehicle sensor and optics systems, with its Digital Crew system. Programme officials at Thales have been working on the Digital Crew concept over the last several years in response to the massive inflow of data to armoured vehicle crews from the ever-increasing number of integrated sensors and cameras on vehicles.

Sydney-based SME Ocius Technology has officially christened the latest addition to their fleet of Bluebottle unmanned surface vessels (USVs). The new USV, named Beth, is longer and larger than previous iterations Bob and Bruce. It will carry Thales Australia towed arrays, a larger winch, and Solar Composite Structures crafted by SA-based Praxis Aeronautics, a start-up headed by siblings Cameron and Katie Donaldson.

The Department of Defence will investigate using swarms of tiny autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) to detect and clear naval mines ahead of amphibious landings. Defence Minister Linda Reynolds revealed the new $15 million research and development project on Tuesday to “revolutionise mine clearance capability in operations close to shore”.

French defence manufacturer Thales will build 43 Bushmaster vehicles for the New Zealand Army at its Australian factory in regional Victoria. The $75 million contract is to deliver five variants of the armoured vehicle by 2022. A Thales spokesperson said the New Zealand Government had selected a battle-proven and highly mobile vehicle that would bring a new level of capability and operability to the New Zealand Army.

The New Zealand Army is to purchase Bushmaster armoured vehicles developed and manufactured by French Thales Group in Bendigo. Thales will supply 43 Bushmasters in a deal worth $75 million. Bushmaster is a heavy 11-tonne, 4×4 protected vehicle with a 4-tonne payload and a V-hull design which deflects explosions away from the passenger cabin.

According to information published by the Dutch Ministry of Defense website on July 1, 2020, the Dutch Army has taken delivery of first Multirole Electronic Warfare Bushmaster 4x4 armored vehicle that will enter in service with the 102 Electronic Warfare Company. The new Electronic Warfare vehicle is based on an Infantry variant of Bushmaster 4x4 armored vehicle converted to be equipped workstations able to receive and analyze radio traffic and cyber activities in combat conditions.
