The Hon Darren Chester MPCURRENT and former members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF), their families and ex-service organisations are being encouraged to engage with the Joint Transition Authority (JTA), which is holding a series of online consultation sessions in April and May. Minister for Defence Personnel and Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester said it was essential to hear from the Defence and veteran community on how we can further improve the support they receive throughout their transition.

Until now, one particular theatre of Australian and New Zealand active service lies almost forgotten in Australian Defence annals - that of our service in the Far East Strategic Reserve (1948-71). This remains the longest unbroken operational defence commitment by Australian and New Zealand armed forces in the history of both nations.

The Hon Darren Chester MP LEGISLATION introduced today by the Attorney-General is a significant step forward in the establishment of the National Commissioner for Defence and Veteran Suicide Prevention — a powerful new independent and enduring body focused on understanding and addressing the risk factors of defence force and veteran suicide. This legislation will formally create the National Commissioner position and sets out the National Commissioner’s functions and powers.

Recognising Australia's Vietnam veterans Each year on 18 August, Vietnam Veterans' Day and the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, Australians pause to reflect on the service and sacrifice of those who served during the Vietnam War. The first Australian troops from the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam arrived in 1962 and over the course of the war around 60,000 Australians served there.
