The first Indigenous supplier contracted for the Hunter-class frigate program’s prototyping phase has been announced. BAE Systems Australia’s subsidiary, ASC Shipbuilding, signed a contract with Indigenous Defence & Infrastructure Consortium and its consortium partner TQCSI-Yaran recently. Former AFL footballer and Indigenous Defence & Infrastructure Consortium Chief Executive Officer Adam Goodes said the company was delighted to be a strategic partner of ASC Shipbuilding on the Hunter-class frigate program.

ASC Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of BAE Systems Australia, has placed three new feasibility studies to support the Hunter Class Frigate Program. ASC Shipbuilding has placed orders with Craig International Ballistics, REDARC Defence Systems and Veem to undertake studies into whether three additional Australian companies can form part of the supply chain for the build phase of the first batch of frigates.

The Australian Government is examining more opportunities for Australia’s local industry in the Hunter Class Frigate Program with three feasibility studies for Australian industry to participate in the build phase of the first three frigates. Prime contractor ASC Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of BAE Systems Australia, has engaged Queensland-based Craig International Ballistics to investigate an Australian solution for ship bridge windows and armour protection.

Work on the Morrison Government’s Hunter Class Frigate Program is progressing as the prototyping phase of the program approaches. The prime contractor for the Program, ASC Shipbuilding, has signed a contract with South Australian Company Infrabuild Steel Centre to support the manufacturing of the frigates at the Osborne South shipyard.

ASC Shipbuilding has signed a contract with South Australian company MG Engineering to build four modules that represent ship blocks in the Hunter class frigate. The ‘mini-blocks’ will be used to test leading-edge manufacturing techniques that will be used to build the submarine hunting warships. Each six metre ‘mini-block’ will have similar features to a real ship block, including watertight doors, manholes, hatches, passageways and confined spaces.

The builder of the Royal Australian Navy’s new Hunter-class frigates has told Defense News that the ship’s design remains “within agreed weight and space envelopes,” despite a recent report in Australian media claiming recent changes have caused concern. ASC Shipbuilding was responding to a June 26 story in the Australian Financial Review that said growth in the ship design’s weight and length is “sparking concerns.”
