Austal Limited’s Austal Australia has delivered the 7th Guardian-class Patrol Boat (GCPB) to the Australian Department of Defence. The vessel, PSS President H.I. Remeliik II, was gifted by the Government of Australia to the Government of Palau during a handover ceremony at Austal Australia’s Henderson shipyard, attended by Australian Minister for Defence Industry Melissa Price MP and RADM Wendy Malcolm, RAN, Head of Maritime Systems, Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group.

Austal has exceeded $2 billion of revenue for the first time and delivered record earnings for FY2020. Austal Chief Executive Officer David Singleton said: “I’m delighted that Austal has generated a record full-year result amidst significant global economic volatility, exceeding the record revenue and profit milestones that we set in FY2019.

Austal is tipping defence markets to strengthen as they continue to be shielded from the economic impacts of COVID-19. The navy shipbuilder reported record revenue and earnings on Monday as it looks to add steel-hulled warship capability to its aluminium operations at Alabama with the help of $US50 million ($69.77 million) in funding from the US Department of Defence (DoD).

Unions have accused shipbuilder Austal of exploiting Filipino workers just months after being awarded a lucrative contract with the Royal Australian Navy. The Electrical Trades Union of Australia alleges Austal has brought a group of about 30 Filipinos to Australia and that they are being paid less than half the minimum wage for electrical and other work.
