BAE Systems launches fifth state-of-the-art Astute class attack submarine

BAE Systems launched Anson, the fifth of seven Astutes being built for the Navy, from its site in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, earlier today (21 April). The Astute class boats are the largest and most advanced attack submarines ever built for the Navy. Measuring 97m long, the boats can circumnavigate the globe submerged and produce their own oxygen and drinking water.

The U.S. Air Force has awarded the contract for sustaining engineering support and program management support services for the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) propulsion subsystem, according to the U.S. Department of Defense contract announcements. The contract, from Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center and announced on Tuesday, is valued at more than $2,3 billion.
Mahindra Defence to build 1,300 Armoured Tactical Vehicles for Indian Army

Mahindra Defence Systems Limited (MDS), a subsidiary of Mahindra and Mahindra has received a contract from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) for manufacturing Armoured Tactical Vehicles (LSV) for the Indian Army for their recce and weapon carrier requirements. Competitive bids were invited by MoD from several Indian Companies and the test vehicles were put through the rigorous and elaborate trial procedure in different terrains including high altitude, deserts, and plains.
IBM scores second Defence ERP deal for $128 million

IBM Australia has scored a $128 million contract for the second phase of the Department of Defence’s enterprise resource planning (ERP) system overhaul. The department revealed the new two-year deal last week, which more than doubles the total value of the project to date. The contract follows on from an initial $95 million deal – which has since climbed to $112 million – for the design phase of tranche one.

A former Australian defence official has spoken out about the political pressure she says she faced when analysing climate threats for the Department of Defence. For much of her 30-year military career, Cheryl Durrant's job involved assessing climate risk. But Ms Durrant, who worked for the Department of Defence as director of preparedness and mobilisation until February last year, said she was repeatedly told by the government not to use the term "climate change" in her work because it was "politically unacceptable".

Boeing has received a five-year follow-on contract to provide integrated logistics support for the Israeli Air Force (IAF) Apache helicopters. The contract covers support for Israel’s AH-64A-model and D-model Apache helicopters. The direct commercial sale builds on the aircraft manufacturer’s decades of support for IAF Apaches. The sale package includes provision for D-model unique repairs, supply of A and D-model technical publications, and logistical, programme, engineering and technical support.
U.K. Reaches $2 Billion Deal to Buy Boeing’s Chinook Helicopters

The U.K. and the Pentagon reached agreement on a $2 billion sale of 14 Chinook helicopters built by Boeing Co., as well as engines, machine guns, radar and missile-jamming equipment for the choppers, according to officials and documents.The agreement was confirmed in a previously undisclosed March 25 letter from the U.K.’s embassy in Washington that paves the way for signed contracts.

Mr Dutton on Monday announced he would overturn the decision to strip honours from around 3,000 defence personnel who served between 2007 and 2013.

US Air Force Names New F-15 Fighter Jet Replacement

The US Air Force has picked a name for its new F-15EX fighter plane. During an unveiling ceremony at the base, they announced that the new plane will be called the F-15 Eagle II in a nod to its predecessor the F-15 Eagle. The F-15EX is the first US Air Force fourth-generation fighter program in over 20 years. The maiden flight for the new plane took place in February at St. Louis Lambert International Airport.

BAE Systems has submitted a bid for a contract to supply the U.S. army with the OMFV (Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle) as a replacement of its M2A3 Bradley IFV. Israel and Greece have signed their biggest ever defence procurement deal, which Israel said on Sunday would strengthen political and economic ties between the countries.
